In January 1998, ALI-ABA and Association for Continuing Legal Education (ACLEA) jointly released MCLE: A Coordinated Approach, the final report of a study of state MCLE policies and procedures. The objective of the study was to review the current system of MCLE and make recommendations for improvements that would benefit lawyers, MCLE accrediting agencies, and CLE sponsors alike. ALI-ABA administered the project and, with the assistance of an Advisory Committee of CLE and MCLE administrators drawn from several different jurisdictions, developed its final report and recommendations.
MCLE: A Coordinated Approach has now been updated, and examines six major areas: (1) accreditation procedures; (2) reporting procedures; (3) recognition of CLE credits across jurisdictions; (4) credit for non-traditional CLE activities; (5) special content requirements; and (6) quality control procedures. The 140-page report contains three parts: the text of the report and recommendations; comprehensive tables of the policies and procedures of the 40 MCLE jurisdictions (totaling over 1,700 line items); and appendices intended as working examples of concepts introduced in the text.
It is hoped that MCLE: A Coordinated Approach will continue to motivate discussion among all parties involved in the MCLE process, generate review of current policies and procedures, and encourage innovation and coordination among MCLE jurisdictions.
The text of the report and recommendations follow here and on ACLEA's home page at www.aclea.org. References within the text refer to the tables and appendices appearing in the written report. To obtain a full copy of the written report (including tables and appendices), contact or via email.
