Estate Planning in Depth
Why Attend?
An intensive, interactive classroom experience complemented by opportunities to learn informally after hours from an expert faculty and from fellow registrants at a reception, a picnic supper, evenings at the Student Union, and more
Comprehensive study materials—typically 1,200 pages or more– that are among ALI-ABA’s best
A relaxed campus environment that helps make learning fun, plus an affordable housing and meal package that keeps costs low
A half-day Sunday primer that brings less experienced practitioners up to speed
Engaged registrants—last year from 31 states—and an expert faculty from across the country who share ideas with one another over the course of five days
A special panel discussion on what's hot and what's not in planning and administering estates in 2012, and a presentation on estate planning in these uncertain times
What You Will Learn
Presented at an advanced level and comprising more than 36 hours of instruction, including 2 hours of ethics credit, this annual course of study considers in depth significant tax and non-tax aspects of estate planning.
The course features an optional Sunday afternoon overview session (at no additional charge) on wealth transfer taxation principles, as well as a special panel discussion on what's hot and what's not in planning and administering estates in 2012 and a presentation on estate planning in these uncertain times.
Time is reserved throughout the program to address registrants’ questions.
Who Should Attend
The daytime sessions Monday through Friday are designed for lawyers with more than basic experience in estate planning. Practitioners lacking a foundational knowledge of trusts and estates law or wealth transfer taxation or who have a limited background in estate planning may benefit by careful preparation for every session, but basic material is addressed in the classroom sessions only as necessary to provide background for advanced understanding of more complex matters.

Here's what registrants have said about this course:
Unfailingly the best estate planning symposium in my four decades of practice. You provide a broad array of topics presented by exceptional speakers. Keep it up, and I’ll be back. -- George L. Kiskunas, Baker Tilly Virchow Krause LLP, Janesville, Wisconsin
I have been coming since 2000 and really enjoy the seminar and being in Madison for the week. Nancy [Henderson] and Read [Moore] do a great job.
The course was excellent. The dorm is great and close to the law school. I recommend anyone who has not been here before to stay in the dorm rather than a hotel. The food at the dorm is great. Madison is a wonderful city, especially the Memorial Union Terrace on a summer evening!
Can’t say enough good things about this program - it was excellent++ - materials are great and speakers were the best of the best.
The speakers at this seminar were all extraordinarily good. Usually there will be at least one or two below-standard speakers, but there weren’t at this seminar.
Accommodations
Undergraduate dormitory housing and university food service are available on campus (less than a block from the Law School) for registrants and their families. Approximate weekly rates for room and board (including breakfasts and luncheons, with other evening meals available at modest cost) are $360 per person in a single room, $255 per person in a double room, and $175 per child 11 and under. Additional site information, including alternative hotel accommodations, will be provided after initial registration for the course. Arrangements for housing should be made on forms to be provided with acknowledgment of advance enrollment; or reserve housing online at Dorm Housing Reservations. Do not send housing fees to ALI-ABA.
In recent years, about half of the course participants have chosen to stay in the dormitory.
Recreational Facilities
Madison's lakeshore and local cultural, scenic, and recreational attractions offer many relaxing pursuits for registrants and families. Biking, swimming, and fishing enthusiasts will find ample facilities within easy reach. The city also has several golf courses (some of them public), tennis courts, and, at one of the five community parks, a zoo. The nationally famous Wisconsin Dells is only a one hour drive from Madison.
